Physical therapy or physiotherapy is a type of manual therapy where a trained professional evaluates and treats abnormal physical function related to an injury, disability, or other health condition.

A physical therapist or physiotherapist does that by using physical stimuli like heat, cold, electric currents or ultrasound rather than by drugs or surgery.

The aim of physical therapy is to relieve pain, help you move better or strengthen weakened muscles.

A big part of physical therapy involves learning special exercises that can improve your mobility (ability to move), coordination and muscle strength.

It is necessary when for any reason your mobility is reduced. For example, after a prolonged bed rest due to injury or surgery.

Now the question is, does physical therapy help you lose weight?

The answer is yes. Physical therapy can help you lose weight by increasing your mobility.

When you carry excess weight, your mobility will be greatly reduced. You may feel pain during any movement. This is because of your inactive lifestyle.

A physiotherapist will teach you the exercise that you can perform to increase your mobility. He/she also gives you general advice on how to improve your wellbeing.

The pain from movement will possibly develop fear to move, which becomes a reason for a more inactive lifestyle and more weight gain.

A certified physical therapist can help you overcome your fear of pain from regular movement. They can help you feel more confident in being active.

They will develop a treatment plan to improve your range of motion and sustainably increase pain tolerance over time.

Evidence also found that regular physical activity is important for good health, especially if you’re trying to lose weight or to maintain a healthy weight.

However, don’t consider physical therapy as a magic that fixes everything. Get this service as a holistic approach to weight loss.

Remember, a healthy lifestyle is key to sustainable weight loss.
